She is also very forward-thinking, looking further and further along and setting up the next big chapter in her life. She’s just turned 50 but she still keeps up with the latest technology. It was very full-on, with all of us having different opinions and everything.īut those moments can also be very lovely and there’s so much I admire about my mother. She directed Dad and me in a Fringe show called Rites a few years ago and I’m not sure I’d want to do that again. I disagree with a lot of the things she says and she disagrees with me. Maybe it’s my age - and that could change in the future. ![]() With the work I make, it’s all about the audience and about entertainment. For example, Mum’s work always has something to say. ![]() Growing up and watching Mum and Dad’s work, I can now see flaws, things that are missing and part of what I do is what she doesn’t do. It’s very physical theatre, so it’s also perfect for someone like me with a dance background.įor the past half year I haven’t been performing much but I’ve been creating a lot of work. It’s the perfect kids’ show, with no dialogue and lots of colour and movement. It’s funny but Splat! was created a few years ago and Dad was in the first production. From that, the company hired me for two shows, which is why I’m working on Splat!, written by Mum and directed by Philip. After that, I applied for the emerging artists’ program and spent last year training in puppetry and creative development. So instead of doing Year 12 exams I came to the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre and did a secondment with the artistic director Philip Mitchell. foundation.Towards the end of high school, I realised I was more interested in creating my own work and the stuff I wanted to create wasn’t dance. Salli also directed two episodes of the new Rosamund Pike series, "Wheel Of Time" (TBD 2021) for Amazon and Sony Television. In addition to "The Gilded Age," Salli will be shooting the finale block of the new Adam McKay series about the Lakers, tentatively called the " Untitled Lakers Project" for HBO (TBD 2022). The show will premiere first quarter of 2022. The one-hour drama follows a wide-eyed young scion of a conservative family who embarks on a mission to infiltrate the wealthy neighboring clan dominated by ruthless railroad tycoon George Russell, his rakish son, Larry, and his ambitious wife, Bertha. One of those being "The Gilded Age." Salli directed half of the episodes of the first season of Julian Fellowes' ("Downton Abbey") new HBO series and serves as one of the executive producers of the show. Now entering her fourth year of directing, Whitfield signed a two-year overall deal with HBO in September 2020 to develop projects for the premiere cable network and to direct and exec produce a handful of major titles for the Warner Media-owned company. It wasn't until five years later when her friend Ava DuVernay hired her two direct two episodes of her hit OWN series "Queen Sugar," that Salli knew that she'd belonged behind the camera and transitioned from acting to one of the top three most successful, female/women of color television directors in the field to date! A feat she accomplished in three short years! But in 2011, Salli directed two episodes of her TV series "Eureka' on the SyFy network and caught the directing bug. Salli started off as an actress and had a successful career that spanned over two decades. Director Salli Richardson-Whitfield is a 30-year industry veteran.
